Commodore’s Update — July 1, 2026

It’s Wednesday again — and welcome to July! The first half of 2026 is behind us, and boy did that go by fast.

The Friday Social is at 6pm. You’re welcome to reply here with menu offerings or post them to the Facebook Members Only Group. We had another great group last Friday — let’s keep the momentum going!

Happy 250th birthday to the USA! Please be safe on the water if you head out this weekend — there are lots of fireworks displays on and around the lake.

A friendly boat-registration reminder: annual registrations expired June 30, so it’s time to make sure your new registration is properly displayed (unless you have a 3-year tag). Historically the sailboats aren’t bothered by Lake Patrol, but GRDA does have the right to inspect registration, documentation, and safety equipment. A few quick pointers to stay in compliance on GRDA waters:

  • Life jackets (PFDs): one USCG-approved life jacket for each person aboard; children 12 and under must wear one at all times while underway. GLSC recommends a life jacket for all passengers at all times.
  • Fire extinguisher: required on motorized boats with enclosed fuel or living compartments.
  • Navigation lights: required between sunset and sunrise.
  • Sound device: a whistle or horn is required on boats 16 feet and longer.
  • Registration: renew annually (or every three years) and display your current decal. Coast Guard documented vessels must have documentation available for inspection. Out-of-state boats may operate up to 60 days before registering in Oklahoma.

The Peanut Regatta #4 went off with drizzly conditions and light winds, but the wind built nicely through the day. Only 5 boats made the field, but those who came enjoyed a great day of sailing with spinnakers aplenty. Congratulations to Claude Phelps in A fleet and Ken Herrman in B fleet! Peanut Regatta #5 is scheduled for July 25th — come join the fun!

The first movie night was a hit, as David Elliott put the newly acquired sound system to use for a replay of the classic ‘Captain Ron.’ Stay tuned for more movie nights through the summer — contact David if you have a sailing movie you’d like to see on the big screen.

Be sure to catch the race recap videos David Elliott creates and posts on social media — he does a great job with these short videos. It’s great to see longtime members returning to sailing, too.

Our Social Media Director has also created some question-and-answer style interview videos that are getting a good run on social media — well composed and shedding new light on the club and sailing in general. Hats off to Clint Baxter for a job well done, and we look forward to more content.

We have a fresh batch of club business cards with a QR code that links directly to the club’s website. Slips are about maxed out for now, but we have room for more fleet members or regular members as trailer sailors. Grab a few from the box on the table by the clubhouse door and help spread the word about our great club!

Bringing a boat or trailer onto the property? Please contact the Vice Commodore and Harbor Master before you haul the vessel in. By rule, all boats on the property must carry a minimum $300,000 liability policy with GLSC named as an insured party.

Closing for now, but I hope to see you out and under sail soon.
