History of Grand Lake

Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees is a man-made lake. Construction began in 1938 when the Oklahoma Highway and Transportation Department built the Grand River Dam to create jobs during an economic downturn of the time. The dam was completed in 1940 which has formed a lake behind it… Now it’s one of North America’s largest reservoirs, with around 1,366 miles (2,198 km) of shoreline and over 41,779 acres (169.07 km) of surface area for boating, swimming, fishing or just plain relaxing!

Fun fact: Governor’s Island in Grand Lake was once known as Blue Star Island, where President Ronald Reagan attended RGA dinners while he was the governor of California back in 1968.
